These verses can be summed up simply as "God's blessings overflowing by His grace to His chosen for His glory". God is love. All true love flows from God and in this love (v. 4d) He predestined His chosen ones for adoption as His children, but only through His one and only eternal Son, so that in everything He might get the glory. We love Him only because He first loved us. The benefits of this adoption are redemption, forgiveness of our sins, and an eternal inheritance. We are sealed by the Holy Spirit as a guarantee of this future inheritance. God the Father is the only actor in this section of scripture. We are being acted upon by Him and this acting is all done according to His grace, purpose and will. The ultimate end of all His acting is the praise of His glory and grace. Outline I. The Blessed God (v. 3-6) A. Chose His elect in Christ (v. 4) 1. Before the world began 2. That we would be holy and blameless before Him B. Predestined His elect for adoption (v. 4-6) 1. In accordance with His will 2. To the praise of His glorious grace II. The Blessed children (v. 7-14) A. Have redemption through the blood of Christ and forgiveness of their trespasses (v. 7-10) 1. According to His grace 2. Accord to His purpose in Christ B. Have obtained an inheritance (v. 11) 1. According to His purpose 2. According to His will C. Have been sealed by the Holy Spirit as a guarantee (v. 13-14) D. All these blessing are to the praise of His glory (v. 14)
