James 1:26-27
esv
26 If anyone thinks he is religious q and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s r religion is worthless. 27 Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: s to visit t orphans and widows in their affliction, and u to keep oneself v unstained from the world.

Notes**
It is easy to think I am doing well, but if my actions are not consistent with what God says is worthwhile then I am deceiving myself. Simply knowing God's word or thinking a certain way is not enough. Religion that is real is evident by action--loving God and loving others in a tangible way. If I love God I will seek to be holy (keep oneself unstained by the world) because He is holy. If I love others, I will help them in their affliction.

Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this:
Instead (of that worthless religion) , religion that is true and clean before God, the Father, looks like this:
s to visit t orphans and widows in their affliction,
help orphans and widows in their trouble,
and u to keep oneself v unstained from the world.
and keep yourself untainted by the world.

ideaexplanation
If I think I am religious, but my actions are contrary then I fool myself.
This reminds me of Jesus's summing up the law: love God and love others. If I love God I will seek to be holy as He is holy. Ministering to orphans and widows is a tangible way of loving others.
