Passage Commentary :: Paul's desire in this passage seems to be two-fold. 1) He is hoping to communicate to his readers the nature and purpose of his ministry to the Gentiles. 2) He is hoping that this will serve as a ground for them to not lose heart over his tribulations (on their account) and I think by way of extension, their coming trials on account of the gospel! The main point of the passage is to glory in suffering for the sake of the gospel and for the sake of the saints! Arc Commentary :: After making some powerful statements about the unity of the body of Christ based on Christ's reconciling work Paul is moving towards prayer. But as he does this he labels himself as "a prisoner of Christ Jesus" and feels the need to insert some more commentary. So, the idea in vs.1 is that of Paul's imprisonment for the sake of the Gentiles. This is then explained throughout vv.2-12 in such a manner that the Gentiles ought not be discouraged or feel guilty or anxious but rejoice and glory in God (v.13). There's a lot of room for further study especially relating to the nature of this mystery, the purpose statements in the second half of the passage, and what is actually meant by the term "Gentiles" (as opposed to "nations").
