Passage Commentary :: Paul is entering into a prayer of intercession to wrap up the massive theology he's presented in ch.1-3. This prayer reflects this theology in significant ways as we will soon see! First, the theology of 1-3 serves as the ground for Paul's prayer. Second, it is also influential on the content of what Paul prays (strength, understanding, triune filling). Third, it motivates his doxology which both wraps up the prayer and the entire first unit of thought. There are three purposes I see in this prayer. The first purpose of Paul's praying is that these believers might be strengthened with power. (some consider this to be the content of Paul's prayer, both are true) The second purpose, to know the knowledge surpassing love of God, comes from being strengthened; we are strengthened in order to know. The third purpose, to be filled, comes from our knowing this unknowable love. Restated :: Paul prays that we be strengthened inwardly so that we can grasp/know God's love so that we are filled with the God's fullness. There is also a strong "new covenant" undercurrent in this passage, namely the inwardness of this prayer. Paul prays that the believers be strengthen in their inner man which I take as Christ dwelling in their hearts. Paul prays that they grasp/know God's knowledge surpassing love, an inward activity. Paul prays that they be filled with God's fullness, as a cup is filled with water or a room is filled with light, it is interior. Paul praises God according to the power which is now working in the saints. This is the New Covenant, that believers have a new heart, a new mind, a new spirit, an inner law-giving! Praise God for his empowering, transforming, persevering inner grace that has real outward effects! Arc Commentary :: (Unusual to me I've used sticky notes to explain much of my interpretive decisions in this text.) vv.14-19 - In this unit there are three main Ac/Pur relationships that structure the prayer. The way I understand it v.14 is Paul's main action and it is realized in vv.16-18a. The action contained in those verses is realized in vv.18b-19a. The action contained in those verses is realized in v.19b which is also the end purpose for praying. Paul makes this prayer with the aim that the believers be filled with all the fullness of God! -- (see sticky notes for smaller decisions) vv.20-21 - In this unit Paul is drawing down an inference from the previous prayer and preceding theology. He restates the main idea from the preceding statements as a ground in v.20. But the main point of the prayer and all this glorious truth is that God be glorified among all peoples for all time!
