Passage Commentary :: The main point of this passage is that believers are not to conduct themselves one way but instead to conduct themselves another way, the way learned in Jesus. But because we were once part of those walking in futile, dark, alien, ignorant hardness we must follow both a negative and positive command: 1) we must put off this old man (way of life), 2) we must put on a new man (way of life). This second command has both a passive and active quality to it. While we are putting on this new man there is also a renewal of the spirit of our minds that takes place. This is not moralistic Christianity but a supremely God-dependent transformation that calls for us to play an active part. Arc Commentary ::
