Main point summary
The tree that is nourished by the word of God is productive and immoveable and will never be shaded from God's life-sustaining light; the wicked plant seeks and receives no nourishment and will be eternally shaded from God's light, cannot produce fruit, and will eventually wither and perish.
Blessed is the man 1
Let me describe for you the type of man who is blessed by God;
who a walks not in b the counsel of the wicked,
One who refuses to follow the advice of the wicked;
nor stands in c the way of sinners,
One who refuses to be emulate the ungodly;
nor d sits in e the seat of f scoffers;
One who refuses revile the wise;
but his g delight is in the law 1 of the Lord ,
One who, instead, takes joy in following the word of God
and on his h law he meditates day and night.
and whose desire to discover and ponder it is never satisfied.
He is like i a tree planted by j streams of water
This type of man can be compared to a tree that is planted near a stream, whose thirsty roots are forever satisfied by the water which never denies them access;
that yields its fruit in its season,
Moreover , this tree will never fail to produce its fruit in the proper season,
and its k leaf does not wither.
nor is it ever in danger of death by dehydration.
l In all that he does,
In all the purposes for which God created him,
he will be successful.
The wicked are not so,
The wicked, however, cannot be described in any of these ways;
but are like m chaff that the wind drives away.
there are no roots, no nourishment, no fruit, and their fruitless skeletons are scattered into the Godless abyss.
Therefore the wicked n will not stand in the judgment,
Because the wicked withered and produced no fruit, he will not withstand examination in court and will receive the death sentence.
nor sinners in o the congregation of the righteous;
Likewise, he will be forever separated from those who are aquitted due to their fruit-bearing.
for the Lord p knows q the way of the righteous,
These things are so because the Lord only shines His face upon and blesses the righteous
but the way of the wicked will perish.
And as a result, the path of the wicked leads only to destruction.
Believers are blessed because of and by their fruit. There is a constant positive feedback loop. Likewise, the wicked exist in a negative feedback loop where their sinful life sucks all nourishment from them until they shrivel up and are blown away. If you want to be blessed by God, you must be known by Him. If you want to be known by God, you must produce visible fruit. If you want to produce fruit, you must receive constant nourishment. The only way to ensure perpetual nourishment is to plant yourself next to the stream of God's word.
