Central Idea : Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, reinforced by the repeated purpose of bringing about the praise of God's glory (v.3). Hoehner: Verse 3 is the main sentence and summary of the eulogy. He argues for "Blessed is God" rather than "Blessed be God. He agrees with my separation of verse 3 saying, "The reason God is to be praised is because he blessed us" (165). Hoehner (v.4) : He understands kathws to be causal - "because, inasmuch, or since". I disagree because it seems evident to me that it is describing the means of His choosing. Issue (v.4) : I currently have arced "in love" with God's predestination of "us". I have not consulted secondary sources yet, but it seems to fit better there than with our appearing before the Lord (not sure how love would function in that particular case, but that does not mean it is not a possible option). If "in love" does go here, I am curious then to what degree God is motivated in His predestination of us by His love for us and to what degree is He motivated by His glory. Issue (v.4): "holy and blameless" - see Ephesians 5:27 - present infinitive Hoehner: The predominant use of agaph is love between humans (57/75 in Paul's letters, 6/10 in Ephesians). He dismisses associating the prepositional phrase with "He chose" because it is too far removed from the verb. He says, "One does not need "in love" to modify "He predestined" in order to show that God's predestination is based in love; the very act of predestination is a demonstration of God's love" (183). This seems to make a more convincing argument for putting it with God's predestination of us, though he is attempting to discredit that stance. In my diagram, which disagrees with this, I put "to sum up" in apposition to the mystery. I now read it more as purpose than explanation. Hoehner (12) : The first to hope: (1) some scholars think the "we" in the previous phrase refers to Jews and the "you" in verse 13 refers to Gentile Christians. Within this view, it could be Jews before Christ who had put their hope in a Messiah or Jewish Christians who heard before Gentile Christians. Hoehner believes the "we" is Paul and those with him and the "you" are Ephesian believers. He thinks the pro simply indicates that the believers reading the epistle had already experienced redemption as shown in previous verses. Issue (13-14) : I currently have arced "you were sealed" as an inference from the "having heard" and "having believed" aorist participles.
