Central Idea: Paul prays that the Ephesians would know the hope of God's calling, which is the riches of the glory of his inheritance among the saints, and that they would know the surpassing greatness of his power toward those believing. Issue (v.17): After consulting Hoehner and O'Brien, I think I believe that "spirit" refers to the Holy Spirit. I am most persuaded by the argument that revelation is the disclosing of divine mysteries and a human spirit is not capable of doing that. Wallace's proposal that it would be "spiritual wisdom and revelation" because of the anarthrous character of the three words was also persuasive for me, but I landed with the former. Issue (v.23): After my study, I believe that "fulness" refers to the body, which displays the already but not yet principle, and has a passive voice. The church is the fulness of Christ, but not completely until the final glorification. Until then, the church continues to be filled by Christ. I think I ultimately side with O'Brien concerning the participle and think it is in the middle voice, "he who fills "I do not cease praying for you because the Father has predestined you, the Son has saved you, and the Spirit has sealed you." from Brett Toney on dia touto. Amen! participle in 18a - causal participle
