Main Idea and Summary
Jesus makes peace by his death—peace with God and peace between peoples. The Gentiles were far away. God brought them near through the death of Jesus. Now believing Jews and Gentiles together constitute the people, family, and temple of God.

The Gentiles' Plight
Before Jesus came, God related to his people through the old covenant. That covenant required various cultural distinctives, such as circumcision, the Sabbath, and clean foods, that separated Israel from the rest of the world. This boundary generally excluded Gentiles from the people of God; they were "the uncircumcision" (v. 11). They were excluded from the people of God and so had no access to the promise that God would reverse the curse and usher in an age of peace through the Messiah. They had no part in God's kingdom. They were outsiders the covenants of promise and their benefits. This meant that they were hopeless, whether they acknowledged it or not. And they had no true knowledge of the one true God (v. 12). This plight Paul summarizes in the next section as "far off" (v. 13).

How God Resolves Their Plight
God resolves the plight of the Gentiles by the death of Jesus (v. 13). Hostility existed between Jews and Gentiles and between both and God. Jesus's death ends hostility and makes peace in three ways. (1) It establishes a new covenant that requires no ethnic or cultural distinctives and so renders the old covenant no longer operative (vv. 14 – 15a). (2) It creates a new people that has no cultural partitions within it or cultural boundaries around it (v. 15b). And (3) it reconciles both Jews and Gentiles to God so that all who now know the Father can boast in no other reason than the Messiah and his blood (v. 16). Jesus offers peace to both Jews and Gentiles (cf. Isa 52:7; 57:19) because through him both can access the Father by the same Spirit (vv. 17 – 18). Jesus is now the defining distinctive of all the people of God from all the peoples of the earth.

The New Status of the Gentiles
The Gentiles are no longer strangers and aliens (cf. vv. 11 – 12). Now those who are in Christ are welcome citizens in God's kingdom. They are members of God's household—his family—and components in his house—the new temple. This temple is not a physical building, like the temple in Jerusalem under the old covenant. It is a multiethnic temple that God builds on Jesus and his apostles and prophets and that consists of all the family of God. No ethnic or cultural partitions or barriers separate or distinguish the people of God; rather, Jews and Gentiles are fitted tightly together into this structure where God dwells. And this temple grows as more people from more peoples receive the message of peace.
