The question here is whether David is justified in his feelings about his enemies. When he asks the Lord to search him, is he asking for clarity about the hatred in his heart? Is he doubting that his hatred is legitimate? I think he is questioning whether it's sin and he ought to. While God has the prerogative to hate those who have offended him, that may not be the case for sinful man. This Psalm may well be the plea of a man who needs purification from his sin.
