God is to be blessed. General Statement: The cause of God is to be blessed is that blessed us with all spiritual blessings. Specific Blessing 1: The cause God is to be blessed is that He chose us in eternity past. The purpose of God's choice in eternity past is that we should be morally pure. Specific Blessing 2: The cause of God's choice in eternity past is that we should be predestined to sonship. The purpose of God's predestination is that his glory should be praised. The relationship between specific blessing 1and 2 is probably not equal. Blessing 2 might in reality be a further specification of blessing 1. If so, that would make the final purpose statement the purpose of the whole section, not just specific blessing 2. That would sit well with the literary context (which includes similar statements in vv. 12 and 14--indicating that this is a focal point in Paul's thought).
