Central Idea: Jesus amazed the people with his authoritative teaching by healing the man with an unclean spirit. Questions/Insights: 1. Why do the prominent English translations neglect to consistently translate "immediately" throughout this passage? The word occurs 3 times (21, 23, 28). It seems to be giving clues for how we can "break down" the passage. For example, in the first occurrence (21), we seem to get a general sense of Jesus' ministry in the synagogue during Sabbaths (furthermore, why do English versions translate the plural Sabbaths into a singular?). In general, Jesus would teach with an amazing authority. Then, in 23, perhaps "immediately" occurs to actually give us a clue that we are going to witness a specific example of the authoritative teaching that Jesus uses to amaze the people--through the healing of this man with an unclean spirit. Finally, in 28, it occurs once more to indicate the result of this amazing authority. Namely, Jesus' fame spreads all over Galilee. In light of these considerations, I have resolved to outline the passage into 3 sections, according to the divisions provided by "immediately": 1. A Summary Explanation of Jesus' Amazing Authority (21-22) 2. A Specific Episode of Jesus' Amazing Authority (23-27) 3. The Sweeping Effects of Jesus' Amazing Authority (28) 2. In verse 24, I am open to varying arcs. I could not come up with anything better than progression to designate the rapid-fire comments of the unclean spirit to Jesus.
