Central Idea: Paul will not give an inch in this matter of preaching free of charge. Where his opponents claim it is a sign of his personal insignificance and of the worthlessness of his preaching (he can't even command a price for his speaking), Paul declares it is a fundamental part of his ministry and will continue to be - as a demonstration of his love; and furthermore as a means to undermine these false apostles. Explanations / Questions: v.7-9, I have two primary arcs here: v.7, I did not commit a sin when I humbled myself in that I preached the gospel free of charge. v.8-9, rather, I accepted support from other churches so that I would not be a burden to you Paul's 'free preaching' was not a sin to be corrected but an intentional service to them. It is something he fully intends to continue (a point emphasized again in v.12). v14-15a, The logical connection here is simple: v.14a, for v.14b, therefore v.15a. This follows the pattern for a Bi-Lateral arc. However, I chose to show the ground and inference separately because it seems that as v.15a is inferred from v.14b, these together ground the statement in v.14a. Insights: For Paul, the gospel defines and filters everything. The manner of the gospel ministry must be consistent with the message of free grace. It is that the gospel itself is at stake, that drives Paul to undermine & condemn these false apostles. The practices of the false apostles was fundamentally antithetical to the gospel itself; so too, was the mindset of the church in which their preaching thrived.
