1 Corinthians 3:1-23
esv
na28
But I, brothers, could not address you
Main phrase, contrast 2:6ff
as spiritual people,
Manner of 1a
but as people of the flesh,
Manner of 1a, contrast 1b
as infants in Christ.
Manner of 1a, restatement 1c
I fed you
Parallel to 1a
with milk,
not solid food,
Content of 2a, contrast 2b
for you were not ready for it.
Reason for 2a-c
And even now you are not yet ready,
Expansion of 2d into present
for you are still of the flesh.
Grounds of 2e
For while there is jealousy and strife among you,
Grounds of 3a, time of 3c
are you not of the flesh and behaving only in a human way?
οὐχὶ σαρκικοί ἐστε καὶ κατὰ ἄνθρωπον περιπατεῖτε;
For when one says, “I follow Paul,”
Grounds of 3c, time of 4c
and another, “I follow Apollos,”
are you not being merely human?
οὐκ ἄνθρωποί ἐστε;
NEW SECTION: THE NATURE OF CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP
4 Assertions about Leaders
What then is Apollos?
Τί οὖν ἐστιν Ἀπολλῶς;
Main phrase (question)
What is Paul?
τί δέ ἐστιν Παῦλος;
Servants through whom you believed, as the Lord assigned to each.
Answer to 5a-b
I planted,
List, ex of 5c
Apollos watered,
List, ex of 5c
but God gave the growth.
Contrast to 6a-b
So neither he who plants
Inference of 6a-c
nor he who waters is anything,
but only God who gives the growth.
Contrast to 7a-b
He who plants
Assertion
and he who waters are one,
and each will receive his wages according to his labor.
Expansion or result? of 8a-b
For we are God’s fellow workers.
Grounds of 8a-c
You are God’s field,
Contrast to 9a
God’s building.
Transition to 10-15
Warnings & Incentives for Leaders
According to the grace of God given to me,
Standard/Authorization of 10c
like a skilled master builder
Manner of 10c
I laid a foundation,
Main phrase
and someone else is building upon it.
Coordinating phrase to 10c
Let each one take care how he builds upon it.
Imperative
For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid,
Reason for 10e
which is Jesus Christ.
Definition of 11a
Now if anyone builds on the foundation
Condition of 13a
with gold,
List of materials to 12a
silver,
precious stones,
wood,
hay,
straw—
each one’s work will become manifest,
Result of 12a
for the Day will disclose it,
Grounds of 13a
because it will be revealed by fire,
Explanation of 13b
and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done.
If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives,
Condition of 14b
he will receive a reward.
Result of 14a
If anyone’s work is burned up,
Condition of 15b
he will suffer loss,
Result of 15a
though he himself will be saved,
Concession to 15b
but only as through fire.
Contrast to 15c
Do you not know
Οὐκ οἴδατε ὅτι ναὸς θεοῦ ἐστε καὶ τὸ πνεῦμα τοῦ θεοῦ οἰκεῖ ἐν ὑμῖν;
Question
that you are God’s temple
Content of 16a
and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?
If anyone destroys God’s temple,
Condition of 17b, // to 12a
God will destroy him.
Result of 17a
For God’s temple is holy,
Grounds of 17b
and you are that temple.
Application to all: Stop boasting in Leaders
Let no one deceive himself.
Imperative #1
If anyone among you thinks that he is wise in this age,
Condition of 18c
let him become a fool that he may become wise.
Imperative #2
For the wisdom of this world is folly with God.
Grounds of 18c
For it is written,
Grounds of 19a
“He catches the wise in their craftiness,”
Quotations of 19b
and again, “The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.”
So let no one boast in men.
Imperative #3, Inference of 18-20 min.
For all things are yours,
Grounds of 21a
whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas
List of 21b, 22e
or the world
or life or death
or the present or the future—
all are yours,
Repetition of 21b
and you are Christ’s,
Expansion of 22e
and Christ is God’s.
Expansion of 23a
Note how 2a parallels 1a. Addressing them as "ppl of the flesh" = feeding them with milk.
Note the switch from past to present. Verbs in 1-2d are past tense; see all the highlighted indicators in 2e-4c of present situation
(1) Apollos & Paul are mere servants
(2) Servants have differing ministries, but it's GOD who makes things happen
(3) Therefore the only real "Somebody" is God, not the servants. HE's the one who's special
(4) Servants with different ministries are still one in purpose, and it's GOD who will assess & reward them -- not the Corinthians. Because the servants are God's, and the Corinthians are his field for them to work in
Pattern in all 4 "blocks": Servant 1 Servant 2 GOD !
Be careful how you build on the foundation of Christ crucified!
Why be careful? Your work will be disclosed on the Day (1st "if-then" statement)
Why be careful? If you build well, you'll be rewarded (2nd "if-then" statement)
Why be careful? If you build poorly, you'll suffer loss (3rd "if-then" statement)
SCENARIO #1 (12-15) : Someone BUILDING on the foundation, & the resulting rewards & warnings
SCENARIO #2 (16-17): Someone DESTROYING the temple, & the resulting warning
If you think you're wise, become a fool (imperatives #1 &2)....
...by no longer boasting in your men (imperative #3), but in all that you have in Christ
