The best that I can tell is that verse 5 is serving as a ground for the fruit in verse 4. The fruit from verse 4-8 serves as the reason for Paul's thankfulness in prayer. Essentially his thankfulness is that he can see the work of the gospel that has taken root in their lives. The entire passage centers around the hope laid up in heaven, namely the gospel. Verse 6-8 is an explanation of the fruit of the gospel note the triple occurence of kathos. 1) The same gospel that goes throughout the world has come to the Colossians 2) this same gospel is bearing fruit and growing 3) this gospel came to them through Epaphras (a faithful steward of the gospel). Therefore, they can be certain that they have a solid faith in the midst of this trial (the Colossian heresy).
