Hebrews 2:1-4
Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard,
lest we drift away from it.
For since a the message declared by angels proved to be reliable,
and b every transgression or disobedience received a just c retribution,
d how shall we escape
if we e neglect such a great salvation?
It was f declared at first by the Lord,
and it was g attested to us h by those who heard,
g while God also bore witness
i by signs and wonders
and various miracles
and by j gifts of the Holy Spirit k distributed according to his will.
Jesus’ testimony of salvation is filled with power displayed in signs and miracles and the work of the holy spirit
We cannot escape (greater punishment) if we neglect the (greater) salvation brought by Jesus
The message (Mosaic Law) given by angels are true and disobedience to it is punished rightly
Jesus himself proclaimed salvation
Listen more attentively to God’s word so as not to drift away from the faith
1. God commands us to listen more attentively to his word God’s Purpose To keep us away from drifting away from the faith. Drifting is highly dangerous. This means that those who do not listen closely, attentively, intentionally, to the word of God, the bible are drifting away from the faith. It’s not just missing something good. They should be alarmed by their condition. Why is “drifting away from the faith” highly dangerous? ( Illustration ) It is what logs or dead fish do in water. They just float and follow the flow of the water towards falling down somewhere. What is the object of faith referred here? Heb. 10:29 “Son of God, blood of the covenant, Spirit of Grace”. The Gospel . What does it mean to listen to God’s word with “much closer attention”? What does our listening to God’s word look like everyday? Every week? Do we just listen on Sundays? If we can listen/read/meditate on days aside from Sunday, is it of great attention? Or is it the most distracted event in our daily life, (if not the most neglected)? If we are guilty, then we have to be alarmed!! We have to realise that we are drifting away. Some may say it is HARD to do. But it’s not. How does listening become hard? Verse 1 tells us to just listen—listen CLOSELY, and MORE ATTENTIVELY. Not labor, nor wage war! What makes it hard is when we become more used to attentively listen to other things (our job, our kids, our spouse, our business, our assignments and projects, our video games, our movies, the television news). It’s sad to realise that we regard these other things as greater than Jesus. Jesus is our first love. ( Illustration ) A. Father and son Sa balay kung sugoon, dili maka'pay closer attention kung ga'video games, ga'watch tv, ga'social media, ga'youtube. DISTRACTIONS B. Husband and wife Sa balay kung nag cold ang love sa asawa, or sa bana.. wala na sya'y affection sa iyang heart for the spouse, unsaon niya oag paminaw ug ayo sa iyang bana asawa..? LOVE C. Employer and Employee Sa work, dili ta maka'paminaw ug tarong sa atong boss kung dili ta ka'SUBMIT sa iyaha kay feeling nato bug'at kaayo iyang ginapa'buhat sa atoa. God’s regard to people’s attention to His word in the OT His word was delivered through angels, they were reliable, and disobedience were dealt with just punishment. Examples: Heb. 10:27 “died without mercy in the presence of 2 or 3 witnesses” Num. 15:30-31 “Anyone...shall be cut off from among his people because he has despised the word of the Lord...” The angels who talked to Abraham about Sodom and Gomorrah. What the angels said came true. And consider Lot’s wife. When she did not listen to the warning, she was dealt with accordingly. She became a pillar of salt. 3. God’s greater regard to our attention to His word today If God dealt the people in the OT harshly. Much more today. Our regard for God’s word has a lot to say about our salvation. In the new testament, the weight of being more attentive to his word has greater emphasis. Here are the reasons why: The word in the new testament was proclaimed by Jesus Himself Jesus is greater than the angels (Gk. “ aggelos ” basically means messenger) (Heb. 1:4). Even angels worship Him. (Heb. 1:6) To neglect the word is to neglect Jesus—our salvation. Jesus who is the (Heb. 1): -heir of all things -through whom all things were created -the radiance of the glory of God -the exact imprint of God’s nature -the one who upholds the universe by His power How can we neglect such great salvation?—kung tinood ta nga saved? -when Jesus’ testimony was accompanied by great signs and wonders? -when it’s accompanied by gifts of the Holy Spirit? Genuine christians are sanctified to have a heart with great love for Jesus. Bahala’g ga’struggle, dili jud gihapon ma’deny ang desire and ang effort to know Jesus more and be in love with him and find joy in His word. For the saved, mao ni ang naa sa iyang heart: Jeremiah 15:16 Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart, for I am called by your name, O God of hosts. The weight of our punishment if we neglect such a great salvation. Heb. 10:27-28 Anyone who has set aside the law of Moses dies without mercy on the evidence of two or three witnesses. How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has outraged the Spirit of grace?
