Outline and Thoughts
Main Point: Those who seek to deceive are here, in response abide in the Word and Spirit of God. Outline: A: Antichrist have come; it is the last hour. B: They (the antichrists) have the flock because they were not really the Jesus's sheep. C: You are anointed with the Spirit by Jesus and have all knowledge of the truth. A': Antichrists are liars and deny that Jesus is the Christ. B': Remember the gospel and abide in God; for he has promised eternal life. C': The Spirit, your anointing, abides in you and teaches you all you need; abide in him. Thoughts: (A) We are in the last hour, the time when many will come and claim they are Christ's and seek to draw away the faithful (Matt 24:24, 2 Peter 2:1-3). This is a sign that it is the last hour and it certainly applies to us today. (B) Yet as these teachers are shown to be false they are removed from the flock. For they were never really part of the flock, but only after their own gain (John 10:11-15). (C) But we who preserver are those who have been anointed by Christ with the Holy Spirit and through him we have been given knowledge of the truth as shown fully in Christ himself - his life, death, and resurrection (Acts 10:38, 2 Cor 1:21-22). (A') The antichrist is shown by his denial of the truth that we have been shown by the Spirit; the truth that Jesus is the Christ. In a myriad of ways the antichrist can teach and lie, but the central lie is to deny Christ. For without Christ no one can know the Father (John 14:6-7) . (B') We, unlike the the false teachers, must abide in the truth. Not being drawn away by the newest fad or idea, but abiding in that which caused new life in us at the beginning - the gospel of Christ. Without Christ no life is possible, but with Christ the promise is given for the faithful - life everlasting! (John 15:1-6) (C') This is how we resist those who are seeking to deceive us - abide in the Spirit with which we were anointed and test their words and works to see if they are from God; that is if the confess that Jesus is the Christ. The Spirit teaches us all things and it is all true and free from lies. We must abide in him! (1 John 4:1-3, John 14:25-26)
