Cast away from Jerusalem, David remains faithful to seek God. Commentary by A. R. FAUSSET The writer, perhaps one of this Levitical family of singers accompanying David in exile, mourns his absence from the sanctuary, a cause of grief aggravated by the taunts of enemies, and is comforted in hopes of relief. This course of thought is repeated with some variety of detail, but closing with the same refrain. Fausset's suggestion makes sense. A context of pain, of being cast away, of hearing taunts brings meaning to the Psalm. Perhaps what most stands out to me is vs. 7. David is experiencing the breakers and waves of God rolling over him. That's a picture of drowning. He associates it with God. That is amazing because the next verse speaks of God's covenant faithfulness towards David. David had an understanding of the sovereignty of God even in deep affliction. Still he held to the Hesed of God, and David's commitment was to remain faithful to God -- praying to Him alone. He would not turn away from God. Vs. 7 draws my attention. Deep calls to deep when facing the roar of your waterfalls. They are God's waterfalls and I am about to drown as the waves and breakers go over me. And in that situation, I call out from the depths of my heart to the depths of God's heart. And when (vs. 6) my soul is downcast and overwhelmed, my faithfulness to covenant (vs. 8) is demonstrated in that I remember God and call out to Him. Quite a thought that covenant faithfulness can be demonstrated simply by who it is that we cry to.

a multitude keeping festival.
Why are you in despair, O my soul?
Why are you cast down, O my soul,
And why have you become disturbed within me?
