Following the example of those who stand firm. This section marks the second of a series of "final" (3:1) exhortations that Paul gives at the conclusion of his letter. The middle section (18-21) clearly form the ground for the exhortation which is repeated twice, once at the beginning (vs. 17) and once at the end (4:1) I really like the series of descriptive statements in 20-21, as if Paul is unpacking one treasure after another: our citizenship is in heaven. Where's heaven? the place from which our saviour will come. Who is our savior? the Lord (think about that one from Paul's perspective) Jesus Christ. What is He up to? He will transform our humble state into conformity with the body of His glory. How will he do that? By the exertion of His power. What kind of power? The kind He possesses to subject all things to himself. I also like Paul's four-fold description of the Philippians: brothers, beloved (repeated twice), whom I long to see, my joy and crown. How I long that I could feel the same for those among whom I minister!
