Death must have really been close to David -- much more than I realize. The joy of the Psalm is understood only if I see the depth of what David must have experienced to say God had bought him up from death. V s 5 s e e m s t o b e David's theme: the pain is necessary to humble us, to help us recognize God, but it will not be forever. I appreciate David's statement of repentance in vs. 6-7. It seems like he recognizes there was a time he thought he stood strong independently. But the pain taught him he was wrong. He realized it was God's favor that made him stand strong. Is there significance in the tense in vs. 2 and 8? I wonder if vs. 1-7 become the basis for David's hopeful cry in vs 8 ff. I'm not sure because though David speaks in the present tense in 8, he switches back to past tense in vs. 11. Unless 8-10 are the cry and in 11 David is again holding to his past experience to give him a sense of hope for his present and future.

O LORD my God, I cried to You for help,
O LORD my God, I cried to you for help,
and You healed me.

You have kept me alive, that I would not go down to the pit.
you restored me to life from among those who go down to the pit.
