What's the relationship between vs. 1-3 and 4-13? A hint may be found in vs 3 and 8. David is sick. Could it be that vs 1-3 are the basis of his hope that God will restore him? Vs. 1b-3 pretty much summarize what David was facing. He clearly places himself in the realm of God's blessing because he, David, is the one who "considers the poor". Why, in vs. 4 does David confess sin? It seems he has set himself up as the one who deserves to be blessed. He is in need, he is sick, he has helped the poor, and it seems he is forming his argument that God will restore him. Then he calls on God's grace because he has sinned. Could it be that rather than basing his appeal on his righteousness, he appeals to God's grace for broken sinners?

For the choir director. A Psalm of David. How blessed is he who considers the helpless;
Blessed is the one who considers the poor!
The LORD will deliver him in a day of trouble.
In the day of trouble the LORD delivers him;
The LORD will protect him and keep him alive,
the LORD protects him and keeps him alive;
And he shall be called blessed upon the earth;
he is called blessed in the land;
And do not give him over to the desire of his enemies.
you do not give him up to the will of his enemies.
The LORD will sustain him upon his sickbed;
The LORD sustains him on his sickbed;
In his illness, You restore him to health.
in his illness you restore him to full health.
