A theme I am seeing in the surrounding Psalms is how the psalmist bases his hope for rescue on God alone. It is almost too much. For example, in this Psalm, there is no recognition of sin or rebellion. Reading this Psalm alone would give one the impression that Israel is faultless, that God has allowed destruction to come to his people with no real reason. Vs 12 clearly gives that impression: why have you done this? As though there is no apparent reason. There is a sense in which that bothers me. I like to see people take responsibility. But could it be that Asaph knows God better? It's similar to Ps. 79:9 when he asks God to atone for their sins. There is recognition of breaking covenant, but bottom line, God has to make it right. What can people do to atone for their sins. So perhaps Asaph just understands that the rescue that is needed, even though the situation was brought on by Israel's fault and rebellion, must be resolved by God alone -- for God alone can rescue.
