Walking forward looking backward, David draws on his experience of deliverance to gain hopeful confidence for future deliverance. I've possibly made this arc too complex, but the basic structure is before (vs. 1-4) and now (vs. 5-17). And he fights through the present by making proclamation of God. Vs. 5 is his statement of how he will fight through his struggle - he will proclaim God's deeds, and vs. 6-16 are his living out that statement -- he declares God's deeds. He starts by speaking of how he knows he is God's covenant people. (6-10) Then he speaks of God's covenant love (11-12) and his call on God to be faithful to him (vs. 13-16) He ends the Psalm with his bottom line -- God will take care of me, Lord do not delay (vs. 17) I really like 11-12. I couldn't understand it at first, it seemed liked the connection between the two verses in the word "for" wasn't appropriate. Then I saw the underlying assumption. David was confident that the Lord would not withhold compassion precisely because evils beyond number had surrounded him. In other words, David was convinced that even though what David was living was the result of his own iniquity, God would not remove His hesed from him and would indeed preserve David. That's an amazing confidence in God, even when David was fully undeserving.

For the choir director. A Psalm of David. I waited patiently for the LORD;
I waited patiently for the LORD;
And He inclined to me and heard my cry.
he inclined to me and heard my cry.
He brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay,
He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog,
And He set my feet upon a rock
and set my feet upon a rock,
making my footsteps firm.
making my steps secure.
He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God;
He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God.

And has not turned to the proud,

Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders which You have done, And Your thoughts toward us;
You have multiplied, O LORD my God, your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us;
There is none to compare with You.
none can compare with you!
If I would declare and speak of them,
I will proclaim and tell of them,
They would be too numerous to count.
yet (although) they are more than can be told.
