Surely there is a God who judges the earth David's hope is that the unrighteous judges will be judged. The Psalm touches on the pain of institutional injustice and hope in a God who judges judges. I'm going with Calvin's interpretation: these "gods" are human judges, probably of Saul's court, who are bringing counsel and judgment against David. Uses of 'gods' in vs. 1 -- Psa 29:1 [[A Psalm of David.]] Give unto the LORD, O ye mighty , give unto the LORD glory and strength. Psa 52:1 [[To the chief Musician, Maschil, [A Psalm] of David, when Doeg the Edomite came and told Saul, and said unto him, David is come to the house of Ahimelech.]] Why boastest thou thyself in mischief, O mighty man? the goodness of God [endureth] continually. Psa 82:1 [[A Psalm of Asaph.]] God standeth in the congregation of the mighty ; he judgeth among the gods. Psa 89:6 For who in the heaven can be compared unto the LORD? [who] among the sons of the mighty can be likened unto the LORD?

For the choir director; set to Al-tashheth. A Mikhtam of David. Do you indeed speak righteousness, O gods?
Do you indeed decree what is right, you gods? (congregation? assembled judges)
Do you judge uprightly, O sons of men?
Do you judge the children of man uprightly?
No,
No,
in heart you work unrighteousness;
in your hearts you devise wrongs;
On earth you weigh out the violence of your hands.
your hands deal out violence on earth.

The wicked are estranged from the womb;
The wicked are estranged from the womb;
These who speak lies go astray from birth.
they go astray from birth, speaking lies.

so that it does not hear the voice of charmers or of the cunning enchanter.

O God, shatter their teeth in their mouth;
O God, break the teeth in their mouths;
Break out the fangs of the young lions, O LORD.
tear out the fangs of the young lions, O LORD!
Let them flow away
Let them vanish
like water that runs off;
like water that runs away;
When he aims his arrows,
when he aims his arrows,
let them be as headless shafts.
let them be blunted.

Before your pots can feel the fire of thorns
Sooner than your pots can feel the heat of thorns, whether green or ablaze,
He will sweep them away with a whirlwind, the green and the burning alike.
may he sweep them away!
The righteous will rejoice
The righteous will rejoice
when he sees the vengeance;

He will wash his feet in the blood of the wicked.
he will bathe his feet in the blood of the wicked.

Surely there is a God who judges on earth!"
surely there is a God who judges on earth."
