In affliction, David does two things well, he cries, and he calls out to God. Other Psalms seem to have a clearer structure or logic. This one seems to be random requests and thoughts. They ebb and flow between statements of need to declarations of the character of God. As David fights for his soul, he cries, but he holds onto and reminds himself of truth in God. In that way, he models well what we are to do in affliction. The first section (1-7) lists three requests that flow from David's trust in God: Trusting, 1) let me not be put to shame, 2) lead me in your ways, 3) remember your mercy, not my many sins. Because he is good, he leads sinners, He is merciful, David again requests forgiveness Those who fear him receive guidance, a prosperous soul, his descendants are blessed, and they know His covenant. The Psalm closes with what seems like a cry and a list of requests: my feet are in a net, I am lonely and afflicted, my troubles are great. And David again requests: bring me out of distress, forgive me, pay attention to my affliction, deal with my enemies, guard my soul, don't let me be put to shame, preserve me. Interesting that David calls out for forgiveness a number of times, yet he has confidence that God will help him because he takes refuge in God - and that his integrity and uprightness will preserve him. And that integrity comes because he waits for God.
