The Psalmist argues his case with God that something is really wrong and God should act. His argument starts both with national (1-3) and personal (4-8) history. God has worked on behalf of his people. His point: this is the way God works. History makes the complaint more powerful: but you have rejected us (9-16). There seems to be no reason why God would choose to abandon his people (16-22), so the final conclusion is that God needs to act (23-26) __ This kind of Psalm is rather unsettling. One could argue that the psalmist is just wrong - that his claims of righteousness and covenant keeping are false, that he is fooling himself, that his suffering is just. But that kind of thought is based on a cause-effect perspective -- that our righteousness ultimately controls all things -- if we were good enough, bad things wouldn't happen. Or one could submit to the difficulties, claiming that God has a higher, but seemingly unknown purpose. This Psalm doesn't give that kind of impression. This psalmist is not submitting. He sounds mad. So what kind of theology of suffering, or sovereignty is found here? Ps. 42:6 credits to God the waves and breakers that crush a life. They are "your" waves and "your" breakers. But neither of the Psalms give a nice, cozy conclusion. They are just painful, with not much hope.

For the choir director. A Maskil of the sons of Korah. O God, we have heard with our ears, Our fathers have told us The work that You did
O God, we have heard with our ears, our fathers have told us, what deeds you performed

You are my King, O God;
You are my King, O God;
Command victories for Jacob.
ordain salvation for Jacob!
Through You we will push back our adversaries;
Through you we push down our foes;
Through Your name we will trample down those who rise up against us.
through your name we tread down those who rise up against us.
For I will not trust in my bow,
For not in my bow do I trust,
Nor will my sword save me.
nor can my sword save me.
But You have saved us from our adversaries,
But you have saved us from our foes
And You have put to shame those who hate us.
and have put to shame those who hate us.
In God we have boasted all day long,
In God we have boasted continually,
And we will give thanks to Your name forever. Selah.
and we will give thanks to your name forever. Selah
Yet You have rejected us

And do not go out with our armies.
and have not gone out with our armies.

You cause us to turn back from the adversary;
You have made us turn back from the foe,
And those who hate us have taken spoil for themselves.
and those who hate us have gotten spoil.
You give us as sheep to be eaten
You have made us like sheep for slaughter
And have scattered us among the nations.
and have scattered us among the nations.
You sell Your people cheaply,
You have sold your people for a trifle,
And have not profited by their sale.
demanding no high price for them.

You make us a reproach to our neighbors,
You have made us the taunt of our neighbors,
A scoffing and a derision to those around us.
the derision and scorn of those around us.
You make us a byword among the nations,
You have made us a byword among the nations,
A laughingstock among the peoples.
a laughingstock among the peoples.
All day long my dishonor is before me
All day long my disgrace is before me,
And my humiliation has overwhelmed me,
and shame has covered my face
Because of the voice of him who reproaches and reviles,
at the sound of the taunter and reviler,
Because of the presence of the enemy and the avenger.
at the sight of the enemy and the avenger.
All this has come upon us,
All this has come upon us,
but we have not forgotten You,
though we have not forgotten you,
And we have not dealt falsely with Your covenant.
and we have not been false to your covenant.
Our heart has not turned back,
Our heart has not turned back,
And our steps have not deviated from Your way,
nor have our steps departed from your way;
Yet You have crushed us in a place of jackals
yet you have broken us in the place of jackals
And covered us with the shadow of death.
and covered us with the shadow of death.
If we had forgotten the name of our God
If we had forgotten the name of our God
Or extended our hands to a strange god,
or spread out our hands to a foreign god,
Would not God find this out?
would not God discover this?
For He knows the secrets of the heart.
For he knows the secrets of the heart.

Why do You hide Your face
Why do you hide your face?
And forget our affliction and our oppression?
Why do you forget our affliction and oppression?
For our soul has sunk down into the dust;
For our soul is bowed down to the dust;
Our body cleaves to the earth.
