The extension of God's reign As I've studied this Psalm, I increasingly get a sense of the majesty of God -- the warrior who delivers His people, who destroys His enemies. there is an early section that speaks of His reign moving north. Then later, he speaks of His reign moving south. When I consider that Egypt to Mesopotamia was considered the known world -- David was declaring God's rule over all of the earth -- all civilization. NCV has an interesting translation of the difficult wording of 12b-13. "In camp they divide the wealth taken in war. 13 Those who stayed by the campfires will share the riches taken in battle." that makes s ens e. There is a kind of parallelism in 12 and 13. A - the kings of the armies flee (they leave their riches behind) B - the women divide the spoil (those who did not participate in battle still benefit from the victory) A - Though some of you men stayed behind and took care of the sheep B - Still you are covered with silver and gold I don't know the significance of the verse, but at least it makes more sense. It reminds me of David's policy that those who stayed behind and guarded the stuff would also receive a portion of the loot. vs. 1-3 extol the warrior might and victory of God vs. 4-10 are an extended description of why God is to be praised. vs. 11-18 seem to be all about the extent of God's salvation/deliverance.
