Devotion in the Greek Class 29/04/2021 Ngwani Joseph Text: 1 Peter 3:8-9 Title: Do not pay back evil for evil but bless 8 Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind. 9 Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing. Introduction: How do we love our enemies? How do we bless those who curse or revile us? Where does that kind of heart and response come from? Look with me at verse 8. Verse 8: Finally, all of you, The “All” takes us back to the previous verses or chapters of this book. He had spoken to citizens and slaves, to wives and husbands and now he says to “all” of you. Unity of mind (Have the same mindset), Sympathy (Feeling with others), Brotherly love (family affection), a tender heart (feeling for others), and a humble mind (a lowly mindset). Our character, who we are from the inside cannot and should not be neglected at any given time. 9a Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling (don’t do something negative) 9b But- bless (Do something positive (the main point) How does verse 8 relate to verse 9a? Verse 8 virtues are inward and bless in verse 9a is outward. Verse 8 is the action and verse 9a&b is the purpose We are seeing that the main point is still Bless and as the means of this main point do verse 8 (get these changes) Verse 9c is the ground for verses 8 and 9a and b – For I was called by God to do it. Verse 9d is the purpose for verses 8, 9a, b, and c. Summary 1. The main point- Bless those who curse you (9b) ( 1 Peter 2:20-23) 20 For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God. 21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. 22 He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. 23 When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly.) 2. What is the action that leads to that main point? Verse 8 – inward change ( 1 Peter 1:22-23,) “22 Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart, 23 since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God;” 3. Ground – God called you/us 9c. ( 1 Peter 5:10-11,) “ And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. 11 To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen. 4. Motive – so that you may receive the promise of the blessing 9d. Because I am promise a blessing if I act a certain way ( 1 Peter 1:3-4,) “3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, ( 1 Peter 5:10-11,) “ And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. 11 To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen. Let’s Pray
