The fact that Jesus is the resurrection and the life enables him to say "Your brother will rise again" and Martha to profess faith in "Christ, the Son of God."
In last week's sermon, Jesus and his disciples were heading back to Jerusalem. It is possible that He may even have learned of Lazarus' death once he arrived in Jerusalem.
This is exactly what Jesus was avoiding- for the glory of God!
Doctrine of the Resurrection
This is the climax of the entire pericope.
Why does Mary stay behind? She was the one who so extravagantly anointed Jesus' feet. It may be that Mary continued mourning while Martha went to greet Jesus as was proper for a head of household.
1. God's promises are for us now. (21-24) Do not constrain the promises of God or put them off to some future time. We need our faith strengthened in the power of the Spirit, so that we believe the promises of God are for us now and so we do not limit God's work in our lives and in our church. 2. The doctrine & promise of the resurrection. (25-26) 3. For all who believe. (27)
