I believe that the main point of this passage is that as Christians we have been called to 'bless' and 'obtain blessings' in the example we have in Jesus Christ (cf.1Pt.2:21). We are not to repay evil with evil nor to revile those who are causing us to suffer, but as lovers of life and those who want to see good we are to seek good and pursue peace knowing that the Lord's eyes are on, and His ears are open to the righteous, and His face is against all those who do evil. One could Cross-reference Romans 12:9-21 as another passage from God's Word that is similar in content and theme to this one in 1st Peter. It is encouraging that Peter and Paul are in agreement about how to respond to this difficult arena of the Christian life--the arena of unjust suffering. Peter's whole lettter center's around 5:12, and his desire that those he is writing to might know the 'true grace of God'! While suffering persecution in civil, social, economic, and domestic circles God's people must remember the example of Christ, and what they are being called to--to bless and entrust themselves to God (2:23). 3:8-12 serve as a final summary to all that the Apostle has been saying since 2:13. It is better to pursue peace and the blessings of God than to pursue vengeance and to find the face of God against us.
