Titus 3:1-7 serves as a series of assertions and exhortations from Paul to Titus concerning those things Paul believes the Cretans need to be reminded of and focused on as believers (Ambassadors) of Jesus Christ. The exhortations are given and the grounds or basis for obedience is laid out: Be an example of the Cross to others because you are benefactors of the Cross yourselves; show grace to others because you have received grace yourselves; be patient with those who are foolish because you also were once foolish; be gentle because you too were once filled with malice; be loving because you also were once hateful and hated. So what is the difference between those who are now Christians and those who are not? Only grace born out of the goodness, loving kindness, and mercy of God is what separates those who are ‘saved’ from those who are not! We are justified only by His grace that we might have the hope of eternal life, and if God’s grace were somehow revoked we too would be hopeless! This passage is humbling and is meant to humble those who read it. Paul is admonishing the believers in Crete to bear the image of Christ in their lives. So often today Western believers arrogantly advance their religious rights with pride-filled speech, hateful antics, and less than courteous gestures to those who are in authority, lost, and hopeless. We need to set our hearts on the grace of God and act with gentleness and courtesy towards those whom we once were. We must not lose sight of the Cross—the grace of God, the patience of God, the love of God, and the mercy of God. We are called to speak evil of no one, to be gentle, and to be courteous towards all as Ambassadors of our King.
