What is a church? It is not a building of brick and mortar! What is a church? It is not an event we attend! What is a church? It is not something we merely join or belong to! What is a church? A church is an organic organism of people who have been born again by the Spirit of Christ who find their identity in Jesus Christ as different appendages all working together to make up a body, both in an identifiable geographical location, and universally throughout the whole earth! Church is not an impersonal 'it', but rather an organic 'we'. It is something WE ARE, our identity, not something we join or attend. This description fits what we see of the Church in Acts 2:42-47. In it we see the content of the 'Gospel', and the context of 'community'. Thus the reason I call the Church a 'Gospel Community'. In Acts 2:42-47 we find a series of identifiable activities the church participated together in, and identifiable traits mutually possessed by those who were the local and universal Church of Jesus Christ. They were devoted to teaching and to truth, and to the complexity of various forms of fellowship. (v.42) They were a people in awe of the wonder and power of God! (v.43) They believed in a life of togetherness (v.44), possessing all things in common (v.44), selling and distributing each one's goods for the greater need to the community. (v.45) They were together daily in the temple and daily in their homes. (v.46a) They received God's gifts with gladness and generosity while praising Him. (Vv.46b-47a) Together, as a hermeneutic of the Gospel, they found 'goodwill' in the culture and society around them. (v.47b) It was in this Gospel environment that God was saving people and adding numbers to His church! (v.47c) The Church is a once alienated people who have now been brought near to God by the blood of Jesus Christ; who have been reconciled to Him in one Body through the Cross; and who are being joined together and built together into an organic temple as a dwelling place for God! (Eph.2:12-22)
