These verses really get to the heart of why Peter is 'practically' writing this letter. Christians throughout the area of Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey) were suffering for the name of Christ domestically, vocationally, socially, and politically. They were going through fiery trials! Peter calls it the judgment of God in 4:17. He uses the state of unbelievers and the judgment they are sure to face as a means of encouraging these Christian Believers to persevere through their judgment and sufferings right now, for glory and blessing await them! The central idea of these verses I believe is found in v.19. Trust God in your trials while/by doing good! Don't suffer as an evil-doer, but if you suffer in God's will for His glory TRUST Him! He is a faithful Creator. That is a nice touch by Peter and unique here to this N.T. Epistle. I don't know of any other place in the N.T. where the author appeals to our faith by referring to God as the Faithful Creator! God is faithful, and we can trust Him! He is the Creator of all things, and nothing is happening outside of His sovereign care and control-YOU CAN GET THROUGH THIS! Don't surrender to the suffering or tolerate shame in what you are going through. You can endure the fiery trial, you can bear the suffering, and you can survive the insults through a joyful confidence in a faithful Creator!

Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you,
as though something strange were happening to you.
comparison
But rejoice insofar as you share Christ's sufferings,
negativepositive
that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed.
actionpurpose
If you are insulted for the name of Christ,
you are blessed,
conditional
because the Spirit of glory
and of God rests upon you.

ground
But let none of you suffer as a murderer
or a thief
or an evildoer
or as a meddler.
Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian,
let him not be ashamed,
but let him glorify God in that name.
For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God;
and if it begins with us,
τί τὸ τέλος τῶν ἀπειθούντων τῷ τοῦ θεοῦ εὐαγγελίῳ;
what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God?
And "If the righteous is scarcely saved,
ὁ ἀσεβὴς καὶ ἁμαρτωλὸς ποῦ φανεῖται;
what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?"
Therefore let those who suffer
according to God's will
actionmanner
entrust their souls to a faithful Creator
