Central Idea - The gospel brings hope, which is cause for thanksgiving to God. Insights - 1. Look for fruit in other's lives: a. Faith in Jesus b. Love for the saints 2. Thank God for the fruit 3. Why give thanks? a. Because hope has come to them. b. Hope comes from the gospel c. The gospel is truth (v.5 and 6) d. The gospel bears fruit f. The gospel is God's grace g. The gospel must be heard and understood h. The gospel must be preached Questions/Explanations: 1. Really wrestling over this issue: What does "dia tnv elpida" (because of the hope) in v 5a refer back to? a. "euxaristoumev" (we give thanks) in v3a or b. "tnv pistiv" (the faith) and "tnv agapnv" (the love) in v4 or c. just "tnv agapnv" (the love) in v4b 2. I forget my basic Greek grammar and syntax. How does the accusative "nv" in v5b relate back to the accusative "tnv elpida" in 5a? Does the declension of the relative pronoun help point back to what it is referring to? 3. The main separation in this passage is at v 5. "The hope" (along with all this it entails - gospel, word of truth, how it produces fruit in them and the world as soon as it was heard and understood, taught through Epraphas) is the GROUND for Paul's prayer of thanksgiving. 4. How does "the hope" in v5a relate to the other references of hope in this book (1:27; 3:4)?

We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
when we pray for you,
temporal
since (the time when) we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus
and of the love that you have for all the saints,
because of the hope laid up for you in heaven.
Of this you have heard before in the word of the truth, the gospel,
which has come to you,
as indeed in the whole world it is bearing fruit and growing--
as it also does among you,
since the day you heard it and understood the grace of God in truth,
comparison
just as you learned it from Epaphras our beloved fellow servant. He is a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf
and has made known to us your love in the Spirit.
