It seems that this section is a discourse about how we need to always be on guard against the wiles of the flesh. We are bent towards trusting in ourselves and our actions in order to have significance, "right-ness", justification. Paul knows this. Paul also knows that a lot of people see the Christian life as this pursuit: do more and do better. He knows our internal workings (because he knew his own). That is why it is ok for him to warn us of this temptation again and again and again. We need to always guard against the flesh becuase it is so "natural" to boast about who we are and what we have done and to mistake that for our acceptableness before Christ.
