What does it mean to live and walk by the Spirit? That is what this section is about. It is telling us that the flesh is at war with the Spirit and we have to be dilligent to walk by the Spirit. SO, what does that mean? Not Gratifying the Flesh Not Living Under the Law It would seem that these two things sum up the Walk of the Spirit. Don't gratify your fleshly desires, including the self-righteous one to obey the law for your own good. Perhaps this is what Paul is doing. In this long letter "bashing" the law, he is cuting off the sinful, fleshly response of, "Well, no law then I can do whatever I want to do." TO this he in turn says, "No, no, no it is now abotu walking in the Spirit. The Spirit is in you, gave you life in Christ, and now it will begin to change you, to grow you."

Galatians
Galatians 5:16-26
NT
esv
But I say, walk by the Spirit,
and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
actionresult
For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit,
and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh,
negativepositive
for these are opposed to each other,
to keep you from doing the things you want to do.
actionpurpose
But if you are led by the Spirit,
you are not under the law.
conditional
series
ground
Now the works of the flesh are evident:
sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these.
ideaexplanation
I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things
will not inherit the kingdom of God.
But the fruit of the Spirit is
love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control;
against such things there is no law.
progression
alternative
And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
If we live by the Spirit,
let us also walk by the Spirit.
Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.
