I think that this section gets at two things. First, Jesus Christ gave himself for us. He gave himself up for us all. However, that is the lesser idea. The main thrust, I believe, is that his giving himself was for a purpose. It was to deliver us, to pluck us out, to rescue us from this present age. He has given us mroe than what we see. This age (now) isn't all there is. We have been rescued from living for now and have a greater calling. There is an age to come that we look to. This world, sin, self, they have nothing for us. He has everything. It should also be noted that all of this was done by God's design and for his glory. He purposefully killed his son for us.
