Paul wants the Colossians and people all over the world to know his sufferings in ministry so that they may be encouraged in their hearts. This encouragement is towards the goal of understanding and knowing Christ. This is the goal of Paul's encouragement because in Christ are all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge (interesting). Paul tells the Colossians of his suffering and ministry to protect the Colossians from being deceived by others. It seems that Paul specifically wants the people to know that although he is absent from them, he is still commited to them and rejoices over their growth in faith. Additionally, Paul wants to protect the Colossians from seeking other things besides Christ.
