In the previous paragraphs Paul says 1) that the purpose of his ministry is to present everyone mature in Christ, and 2) that Christ is first in all things. Therefore, Paul says the Colossians should walk in Christ as they received Him. The Colossians received Christ by faith. Therefore they should continue to live, or walk in Christ by faith. Paul describes this walk in Christ. First, Christians are rooted in Christ. Christ is the foundation and supplier of life to the Christian as roots are to a new tree sapling. And as Christians walk they become built up and established in faith. The way to grow in the Christian life is to grow in faith of Christ. This is how the Colossians were instructed to live by Christian teachers, rooted in Christ and growing in faith, "all while overflowing with gratitude." The opposite of walking in this way is to be taken captive by human and wordly philosophies that do not accord with Christ. Next Paul provides several arguments for his statement about the necessity of living with Christ as Lord, not according to other worldly philosophies. It is grounded by six main statements. 1. Jesus Christ is God (2:9) 2. The Colossians are filled or complete in Christ 3. The Colossians were spiritually circumcised with Christ in baptism (death) and raised from the dead in Christ. 4. God made the Colossians alive in Christ. God did this by forgiving the Colossians of their transgressions. God forgave the Colossians by taking away the record of debts and legal demands against the Colosians that resulted from their trangressions. Finally, God cancelled the debt of the Colossians by nailing His Son to the cross. 5. God triumphed over the rulers and authorities through Christ and put them to open shame.
