Paul tells the Colossians to live with a heavenly mindset, not a earthly mindset. This command is grounded by the fact that the Colossians have died in Christ and their true life is now hidden in with Christ in God. When Christ is revealed the Colossians life will also be revealed in Glory. Furthermore, the Colossians are commanded to live according to this death and life in Christ. Since the Colossians have died they are dead to sin and should live accordingly. The Colossians need to cast off the practices of the old self that lead to the wrath of God. The Colossians must instead put on the new self. Paul says this new self is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the one who created him. I think this means that the new self is constantly being renewed in knowledge about Christ. This knowledge effects the actions of the believer and eventually the person becomes more like Christ. The renewal is not dependent upon worldly rank or position. This is because Christ is in all types of Christian people.
