Who may have fellowship with the Lord? He whose conduct is whole, without blemish (2a-b). This wholeness is evident through: (a) his speech: honest, an expression of truth that is in his heart. (b) his relationships: He does not cause harm with his tongue He does not look to bring harm his neighbour He does not pick a fight with a friend (c) his values: He despises the wicked but honours those who fear God. (d) his view of earthly pleasure and treasure
Who may have fellowship with the eternal creator God? More than that. Who may stay, as it were, as a guest in his holy place? The first clause in the Psalm's answer to this question (verse 2) appears to rule us out: He who walks blamelessly (without blemish) and does what is right . We can be like a Pharisee and presume we have it all together (Luke 18:11). If we do this we are lost ( Luke 18:14 ) . Or, we can acknowledge that in our rebellion we are unworthy and are cut off from fellowship with God. But God has provided One who did walk blamelessly, and through faith in Him His righteousness is ours (2 Cor 5:21). The blessing at the the end of the Psalm may truly be said of Him (Hebrews 1:3; Hebrews 2:9). He will never be shaken. But we must not stop there. We now look to him who has made us whole (without blemish), and become more like him. We are invited into the wholeness of which the Psalmist speaks; to be renewed in our thinking and our speech, our relationships, our values and our view of pleasure and treasure. Jesus and Paul make the same point in the New Testament (e.g. Matthew 5:48 and Gal 5:16-21). He who does these things shall not be shaken. Note: I found Jonathan Pennington's comments helpful: "The call to teleios -ity [in Matthew 5:48 ] and throughout the Sermon [on the Mount] is the same call to holiness we see throughout the Old Testament (and the rest of the New Testament) - not moral perfection but a whole hearted orientation towards God. ... Grace and virtue are friends, not enemies. The command that is present in Matthew 5:48 ... is an invitation to flourish like God the Heavenly Father, or to put it in the macaristic form, of being called sons of God."
