My first question is, what is the order of the futility of mind? What causes what? Is there a break in thought from 19ff? If their hearts weren't hard, they wouldn't have had ignorance in them. If they weren't ignorant, they wouldn't have been alienated from the life of God.

Therefore, I am saying and testifying this in the Lord,
that you walk no longer
as also the Gentiles are walking,
[the way that they walk is] in the futility of their minds.
[The reason Gentiles walk in such futile ways is because they're the ones who are] being darkened in their understanding,
[which is the result of having been] alienated from the life of God
because of the ignorance that is in them,
[and ultimately, they walk in futility] due to the hardness of their heart.
ground
They, becoming calloused,
gave themselves up to sensuality,
greedy to practice every kind of impurity.

But you did not learn Christ in this way
[The reason I know that is] since indeed you heard Him
and were taught in Him,
as the truth is in Jesus,
progression
to put off the old man according to the former way of life
the one who is being corrupted according to deceitful desires
ideaexplanation
and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds,
and to put on the new man,
the one created according to the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
