Wives, submit to your own husbands
Here is the way that wives should submit to their own husbands: in the way they would submit to the Lord
actionmanner
Why should wives submit in this way? Because the husband is the head of the wife
in the same way that Christ is the head of the church,
in that He is Himself the savior of the body
ideaexplanation
comparison
ground
but as the church submits to Christ,
in this way also wives [ought to submit] to their husbands in all things
Husbands, love [your] wives
This is the way that husbands should love their wives: in the same way that Christ loved the church
and gave Himself for her
progression
Christ gave Himself for this purpose: in order that He might sanctify her,
This is the way that He sanctified her: having cleansed [her] by the washing of water with the Word
The reason He has washed her is in order that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory,
Here is what the church looks like when it is glorious: not having a spot or wrinkle or any such thing,
but that she might be holy and without blemish.
negativepositive
actionpurpose
Thus, husbands also ought to love their own wives
as their own bodies.
The one who loves his wife loves himself.
For no one ever hated his own flesh
but nourishes and cares for it,
as also Christ [does for] the church.
because we are members of His body
For this reason a man will leave his father and mother
and will be glued to his wife,
and the two will become one flesh.
actionresult
This mystery is huge,
but I am saying [it refers] to Christ and the church.
concessive
series
Nevertheless, each of you must love his own wife
as (he loves) himself,
and the wife must (must see to it) that she respects her husband.
