What a passage! Piper took five sermons on it, and didn't even begin to go to the bottom of it. Verse 12 starts a thought, and then 13-17 are a parenthesis before he gets back to the topic in verses 18 & 19. 20 & 21 are the goal of it all. I haven't even touched the "therefore" at the start of verse 12! Verse 12 is the thesis. Sin came because of Adam. We all die because he sinned. The parenthesis exists to answer the objection that since none of us sinned like Adam, we shouldn't be punished in the same way. This leads to a necessary tangent about the difference between the imputation of death via Adam and the imputation of righteousness via Jesus. They are not the same in that: one is to all the other to some, one was to ruin and other to reigning. The tangent from the parenthesis leads right back to the thesis. How could one, invisible thing Christ did save us? The same way one invisible thing done by Adam damned us all. Having said all that, Paul can now move forward into saying something new. What was the purpose of Moses' Covenant? To show more of the sins we all commit. Even after highlighting their sins, God still covenanted with Israel. Satan's great accomplishment -- sin -- was shone in the reign of death. But the Kingdom of the Seed of the Woman leads the way to eternal life.

Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man,

and death through sin,

Now indeed sin was in the world before the law was given,
but sin is not counted where there is no law.
concessive
Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come.
But the free gift is not like the trespass.
For if many died through one man's trespass,
much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many.

And the free gift is not like the result of that one man's sin.
For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation,
but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification.
