The best friend is not soul, even though it's comfortable to feast, but wisdom even though it's  heavy when it convicts you.

μὴ ἐπάρῃς σεαυτὸν ἐν βουλῇ ψυχῆς σου
Не возноси себя в помыслах души твоей,
Do not fall into the grip of your passion,
Don't fall under the power of evil desires. They are burning flames that will destroy you,
ἵνα μὴ διαρπαγῇ ὡς ταῦρος ἡ ψυχή σου
чтобы душа твоя не была растерзана как вол:
lest like fire it consume your strength.

It will eat your leaves
and you will be left to wither, like a tree with burned leaves and scorched fruit.

For fierce passion destroys its owner
Evil desires will destroy you, and your enemies will laugh.
καὶ ἐπίχαρμα ἐχθρῶν ποιήσει αὐτόν

because some will be friendly when everything is fine, but they won't help when you have trouble.

и не останется с тобою в день скорби твоей;
but they will not be around in time of trouble.

Another is a friend who turns into an enemy,
If you argue with other friends, they will become enemies and tell about the argument so you will look bad.
καὶ μάχην ὀνειδισμοῦ σου ἀποκαλύψει
и откроет ссору к поношению твоему.
and tells of the quarrel to your disgrace.
καὶ ἔστιν φίλος κοινωνὸς τραπεζῶν
Бывает другом участник в трапезе,
Others are friends, table companions,
Still others will come to dinner but not to help if you have trouble.
καὶ οὐ μὴ παραμείνῃ ἐν ἡμέρᾳ θλίψεώς σου
и не останется с тобою в день скорби твоей.
but they cannot be found in time of affliction.
καὶ ἐν τοῖς ἀγαθοῖς σου ἔσται ὡς σὺ
В имении твоем он будет как ты,
When things go well, they are your other self,
In good times, they will be so close, that your servants will have to obey them.
καὶ ἐπὶ τοὺς οἰκέτας σου παρρησιάσεται
и дерзко будет обращаться с домочадцами твоими;
and lord it over your servants.

но если ты будешь унижен,
If disaster comes upon you,
But if you lose your wealth, they will disappear.
καὶ ἀπὸ τοῦ προσώπου σου κρυβήσεται

Верный друг — крепкая защита:
Faithful friends are a sturdy shelter;
Loyal friends will protect you with all their strength
ὁ δὲ εὑρὼν αὐτὸν εὗρεν θησαυρόν
кто нашел его, нашел сокровище.
whoever finds one finds a treasure.
φίλου πιστοῦ οὐκ ἔστιν ἀντάλλαγμα
Верному другу нет цены,
Faithful friends are beyond price,
and are worth more than any other treasure. *
καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν σταθμὸς τῆς καλλονῆς αὐτοῦ
и нет меры доброте его.

They are even like medicine that can save your life. And here's how you can have such loyal friends:

Сын мой! от юности твоей предайся учению,
My child, from your youth choose discipline;
Students, be disciplined and learn Wisdom when you are young, and as your hair turns gray, she will never desert you.
καὶ ἕως πολιῶν εὑρήσεις σοφίαν
и до седин твоих найдешь мудрость.
and when you have gray hair you will find wisdom.
ὡς ὁ ἀροτριῶν καὶ ὁ σπείρων πρόσελθε αὐτῇ
Приступай к ней как пашущий и сеющий,
As though plowing and sowing, draw close to her;
Learning Wisdom isn't so hard. It's like plowing a little and planting a few seeds— then a short time later eating food from the harvest.
καὶ ἀνάμενε τοὺς ἀγαθοὺς καρποὺς αὐτῆς
и ожидай добрых плодов ее:
then wait for her bountiful crops.
ἐν γὰρ τῇ ἐργασίᾳ αὐτῆς ὀλίγον κοπιάσεις
ибо малое время потрудишься в возделывании ее,
For in cultivating her you will work but little,
But to those who are fools or have no discipline, the job will seem too great, and they will give up.
καὶ ταχὺ φάγεσαι τῶν γενημάτων αὐτῆς
и скоро будешь есть плоды ее.
and soon you will eat her fruit.

ὡς τραχεῖά ἐστιν σφόδρα τοῖς ἀπαιδεύτοις
Для невежд она очень сурова,
She is rough ground to the fool!
When Wisdom tests them, they will toss her aside, as if she were a stone too heavy to carry.
καὶ οὐκ ἐμμενεῖ ἐν αὐτῇ ἀκάρδιος
и неразумный не останется с нею:
The stupid cannot abide her.
ὡς λίθος δοκιμασίας ἰσχυρὸς ἔσται ἐπ’ αὐτῷ
она будет на нем как тяжелый камень испытания,
She will be like a burdensome stone to them,
Wisdom is hidden from most people, just as her name suggests.
καὶ οὐ χρονιεῖ ἀπορρῖψαι αὐτήν
и он не замедлит сбросить ее.
and they will not delay in casting her aside.

и не отвергни совета моего.
do not refuse my counsel.

Наложи на ноги твои путы ее
Put your feet into her fetters,
Carry her on your shoulders and don't let those chains make you angry. Make up your mind to follow and stay close to Wisdom wherever she goes.
καὶ εἰς τὸν κλοιὸν αὐτῆς τὸν τράχηλόν σου
и на шею твою цепь ее.
and your neck under her yoke.
ὑπόθες τὸν ὦμόν σου
Подставь ей плечо твое,
Bend your shoulders
καὶ βάσταξον αὐτὴν
и носи ее
and carry her
καὶ μὴ προσοχθίσῃς τοῖς δεσμοῖς αὐτῆς
и не тяготись узами ее.
and do not be irked at her bonds.
ἐν πάσῃ ψυχῇ σου πρόσελθε αὐτῇ
Приблизься к ней всею душею твоею,
With all your soul draw close to her;
Search, and you will find her; once she is yours, hold her tightly.
καὶ ἐν ὅλῃ δυνάμει σου συντήρησον τὰς ὁδοὺς αὐτῆς
и всею силою твоею соблюдай пути ее.
and with all your strength keep her ways.
ἐξίχνευσον καὶ ζήτησον
Исследуй и ищи,
Inquire and search,
Then she will give you a peaceful and happy life.
καὶ γνωσθήσεταί σοι
и она будет познана тобою и,
seek and find;
καὶ ἐγκρατὴς γενόμενος
сделавшись обладателем ее,
when you get hold of her,
μὴ ἀφῇς αὐτήν
не покидай ее;
do not let her go.

Thus at last you will find rest in her,
Her chains on your feet will become your protection, and those on your neck will turn into a royal robe,
καὶ στραφήσεταί σοι εἰς εὐφροσύνην
и она обратится в радость тебе.
and she will become your joy.
καὶ ἔσονταί σοι αἱ πέδαι εἰς σκέπην ἰσχύος καὶ
Путы ее будут тебе крепкою защитою,
Her fetters will be a place of strength;
decorated with gold jewelry and tied with a purple cord.
οἱ κλοιοὶ αὐτῆς εἰς στολὴν δόξης
и цепи ее — славным одеянием;
her snare, a robe of spun gold.
κόσμος γὰρ χρύσεός ἐστιν ἐπ’ αὐτῆς
ибо на ней украшение золотое,
Her yoke will be a gold ornament;
You will wear Wisdom like a beautiful robe or like a crown at a victory celebration.
καὶ οἱ δεσμοὶ αὐτῆς κλῶσμα ὑακίνθινον
и узы ее — гиацинтовые нити.

στολὴν δόξης ἐνδύσῃ αὐτὴν
Как одеждою славы ты облечешься ею,
You will wear her as a robe of glory,
Students, you are able to discipline yourself and learn Wisdom— just put your mind to it!
καὶ στέφανον ἀγαλλιάματος περιθήσεις σεαυτῷ
и возложишь ее на себя как венец радости.
and bear her as a splendid crown.

ἐὰν θέλῃς τέκνον
Сын мой! если ты пожелаешь ее,
If you wish, my son,
Do you love to listen? That's all it really takes to gain Wisdom.
παιδευθήσῃ
то научишься,
you can be wise;
καὶ ἐὰν ἐπιδῷς τὴν ψυχήν σου
и если предашься ей душею твоею,
if you apply yourself,
πανοῦργος ἔσῃ
то будешь ко всему способен.
you can be shrewd.
ἐὰν ἀγαπήσῃς ἀκούειν
Если с любовью будешь слушать ее,
If you are willing to listen,
Spend time with older people and stay close to those who are wise.
ἐκδέξῃ
то поймешь ее,
you can learn;
καὶ ἐὰν κλίνῃς τὸ οὖς σου
и если приклонишь ухо твое,
if you pay attention,
σοφὸς ἔσῃ
то будешь мудр.
you can be instructed.

ἐν πλήθει πρεσβυτέρων στῆθι
Бывай в собрании старцев,
Stand in the company of the elders;
When godly people speak, pay attention, and memorize every wise saying you hear.
καὶ τίς σοφός αὐτῷ προσκολλήθητι
и кто мудр, прилепись к тому;
stay close to whoever is wise.
πᾶσαν διήγησιν θείαν θέλε ἀκροᾶσθαι
люби слушать всякую священную повесть,
Be eager to hear every discourse;
καὶ παροιμίαι συνέσεως μὴ ἐκφευγέτωσάν σε
и притчи разумные да не ускользают от тебя.

καὶ βαθμοὺς θυρῶν αὐτοῦ ἐκτριβέτω ὁ πούς σου
и пусть нога твоя истирает пороги дверей его.
let your feet wear away their doorsteps!
διανοοῦ ἐν τοῖς προστάγμασιν κυρίου
Размышляй о повелениях Господа
Reflect on the law of the Most High,
Never stop considering God's laws and commands, and he will strengthen your mind with the Wisdom you want.
καὶ ἐν ταῖς ἐντολαῖς αὐτοῦ μελέτα διὰ παντός
и всегда поучайся в заповедях Его:
and let his commandments be your constant study.
αὐτὸς στηριεῖ τὴν καρδίαν σου
Он укрепит твое сердце,
Then he will enlighten your mind,
καὶ ἡ ἐπιθυμία τῆς σοφίας δοθήσεταί σοι
и желание премудрости дастся тебе.
and make you wise as you desire.
