ὅτε γὰρ δοῦλοι ἦτε τῆς ἁμαρτίας,
v For when you were slaves of sin,
ἐλεύθεροι ἦτε τῇ δικαιοσύνῃ.
you were free in regard to righteousness.

BUT NOW you have been set free from sin AND have become slaves of God. WITH THE RESULT you get fruit that leads to sanctification and IT'S END is eternal life. This is so, BECAUSE the wages of sin is death, BUT the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The reason of the argument in Romans 6:20-22 is verse 23 "FOR the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. "
