Main point summary (see notes below arc for a more detailed breakdown)
A person who loves God's instruction and meditates on how to please him will bare fruit and never die; the alternative lifestyle is considered wicked and worthless - those who live it will never see heaven.
Psalms 1:1-6
Blessed is the man 1
This is the kind of person who will find great blessing in life....
who a walks not in b the counsel of the wicked,
the one who is not influenced by the "wisdom" of ungodly people,
nor stands in c the way of sinners,
who does not copy their behaviour
nor d sits in e the seat of f scoffers;
or find his home with them;
but his g delight is in the law 1 of the Lord ,
but who loves God's instruction
and on his h law he meditates day and night.
and day and night he ponders what is pleasing to God.
He is like i a tree planted by j streams of water
The man blessed by God is like a tree planted near streams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
such trees (and thus people) bring forth good fruit in time
and its k leaf does not wither.
and never die
l In all that he does, he prospers.
This one finds success in all he does
The wicked are not so,
The wicked are nothing like this solid, planted tree that brings forth fruit and doesn't die
but are like m chaff that the wind drives away.
instead, they are like rubbish being blown along the street by wind.
Therefore the wicked n will not stand in the judgment,
The wicked will be condemned on the day Christ judges the earth
nor sinners in o the congregation of the righteous;
and they will not enjoy heaven with those found righteous
for the Lord p knows q the way of the righteous,
because God looks with favour on the way the righteous live
but the way of the wicked will perish.
but brings eternal judgement on the lives of those who've lived in unrighteousness (wickedness)
Because what he does is rooted in God's law and when you walk according to God's ways, God prospers the work of your hands.
He bares fruit and will never die (prospers in all he does), just like a tree that is continually fed by the water of a stream. ---- Just like a tree planted by streams of water, this person prospers (he bares fruit and doesn't die) Note: Prospering is not succeeding in every business venture etc, it's prospering in what you've come to delight in, God's ways.
God "knows" those who are His and their ways. This means we have relationship with him and he watches over us. (Jn 10:14; 2 Tim 2:19)
Blessed is the man who loves God's instruction and thinks about pleasing God all the time.
The wicked will not enter heaven at the judgement. For they are like rubbish driven away by the wind (unstable and worthless)
Blessed is the man who loves God's instruction and thinks about pleasing Him, for he bares fruit and will never die.
My findings from Psalm 1.......
1. Two types of people in life: the one who is blessed (1a) and the wicked (4a) a) The Lord doesn't do "grey areas". You're either "blessed" or "wicked". There is nothing in-between. b) During his incarnation, Jesus spoke in such terms, saying "Whoever is not with me is against me" - Mt 12:30 c) Again, Jesus spoke through the Apostle John, saying to the church at Laodicea, "So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot not cold, I will spit you out of my mouth." (Rev 3:16) d) The Word of God is much more "black and white" than you may think. According to God's Word, if you're not in the "blessed" category, you're firmly in that of the "wicked". 2. The "blessed" are those who delight in the law of the Lord (2a). Their delight is demonstrated by their pouring over God's Word, day and night, seeking God's will (2b). a) The blessed spend day and night learning how to please God, because their hearts delight in God and His instruction. a) They recognise that meditating on God's Word is the only way to understand His ways. 3. The "blessed" are those who don't find their home in this world (1b-1d) a) a) The blessed are not influenced by ungodly people - The views of those in popular culture who have no fear of God, hold no influence or sway in the lives of the blessed (1b) b) The blessed do not copy the behaviour of people who have no regard for God, regardless of how "influential", "cool", or "wise" they are in the worlds eyes (1c). c) The blessed do not look for a home or fellowship with people who disregard God (1d). (Note: That's not to say the "blessed" don't eat with sinners - Jesus did. It's to say they are not "at home" with such people. Meaning, they don't sit in agreement with their worldviews, go to them for advice on how to live, or rejoice in their fellowship - the person who loves God's ways will feel like a foreigner in the company of those who find their instruction, enjoyment and home among the people of the world.) 4. The reason these people are blessed is because they have true prosperity (3d) a) They prosper in all they do because their works bring forth good fruit for God (3b). b) They prosper in all they do because they will never die, but have life forever (3c). c) True, biblical prosperity is not concerned with houses, cars, businesses or any such thing (despite what many "preachers" or "prophets" may tell you). Rather, true prosperity is concerned with fruit that stands the testing on judgement day (see 1 Corinthians 3:15 and Matthew 25:31-46), and eternal life (see John 10:10 and John 17:3) d) Those who walk in fruit baring, abundant, eternal life are like a tree planted by a stream - that is, they draw on living water (see John 15:1-11) which brings forth fruit and sustains life. e) The person who is like this planted tree is the one who delights in God's Word, and thinks about it continually. This is the one who brings forth fruit and thus experiences eternal life. f) Christian faith is more than agreement over the facts of what Jesus Christ did for you - it's a treasuring of Jesus as supreme in your heart above all things. This is demonstrated by how you treat His Word and seek to follow Him. Jesus is the Word of God (see John 1:14) 5. The wicked are not "blessed" or "prosperous" - they will perish (4a-6b) a) Those who take no interest in Jesus and don't seek God's Word may seem like they have it all together and are prospering. However, they're described as "chaff that the wind drives away" (4b) . Picture an alley way behind some terraced houses, filled with rubbish being blown by the wind. This is a picture of those who take no delight in God's Word, but are led by the opinions of the world and popular culture. b) When these ones stand before Jesus, they will be condemned (5a) and find no place in heaven (5b) because their life has been apart from the Lord (6a-b), demonstrated in their indifference towards His Word (1a-2b)
