In these opening verses of 1 Peter we are introduced to the author and recipients of this letter. Special emphasis is given to describe the works of God (Father, Son and Spirit) in the lives of the believers. vv. 1-2 After identifying his readers as "elect exiles" in verse 1, Peter goes on to explain their relationship to each of the members of the Trinity. God the Father, according to this foreknowledge, chose each of them to be elect exiles. God the Spirit performs a sanctifying work in the lives of the believers. God the Son, Jesus Christ, was the one who shed his blood and died for their sins. vv. 3-5 After his introduction, Peter immediately begins by praising God for what he has done. The key point is how Christians have been born again to a living hope, which was made possible because of God the Father's great mercy and God the Son's resurrection from the dead. God's power is also guarding those whom he has chosen, and for these believers an in imperishable, undefiled and unfading inheritance awaits them in heaven. Application: In light of all that God has done for us, we should respond in humility, thanking him for the living hope that we have as Christians. This is a great passage to remind us of what a great privilege and joy it is to be chosen by God and to have faith in Jesus Christ. May the way we live our lives be shaped by what He has done for us.
