Having just reminded believers of the new identity that they have through believing in Jesus Christ, Peter in this passage urges Christians to live honorably so that glory may be brought to God as non-believers see such conduct. vv. 11-12 Believers are urged not to indulge in sinful desires, which "wage war against your soul". The concept of waging war suggests that it is a serious matter involving harmful conflict. Instead, Christians should keep their conduct honorable, bearing good witness to their faith, so that in seeing this non-believers may glorify God. vv. 13-17 The idea of living honorably is explained and applied in the context of society. Christians are to be subject to human institutions (governments) because it is the will of God for his people (v15). By "doing good" (being subject to human authorities), Christians are able to silence accusations brought against them and bear good witness to their faith. Finally, Peter reminds the believers that they are ultimately servants of God, who should be feared.
