Following on from the previous section in which believers are encouraged to be holy and to conduct themselves with fear, here Peter reminds them of how their actions should be a reflection of the change they have undergone in becoming Christians. vv. 22-26 The reason for Peter's command in v22 is given in vv23-25. Believers are to "love one another earnestly from a pure heart" because they have been born again of an imperishable seed, that is, the word of God which remains forever. It is through the power of this very word that believers are given new life and are able to live lives filled with love for one another. Proper Christian conduct comes as a result of the impact that the good news of the word has had in their lives. vv. 1-3 In light of the role that the word of God has played in giving new life, believers should therefore follow the two actions mentioned in vv1-3: "Put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander" (v1) "Long for the pure spiritual milk" (v2) Given what the word of God has done, Peter highlights qualities which should therefore no longer be a part of a Christian's life; they should be "put away". The second command requires a right attitude towards the word of God (which is the spiritual milk). Given the power of God's word and the good news that it contains, Christians should therefore long for even more of it since it will help them grow.
